Sword of Mana
Description
Sword of Mana is a 2003 action RPG for Game Boy Advance developed by Square Enix and Brownie Brown. It's an enhanced remake of the series' first entry, originally released as Final Fantasy Adventure in North America and Mystic Quest in Europe. The game follows a hero and heroine fighting to protect the Mana Tree from the Dark Lord in a high fantasy setting.
While maintaining the original's core plot, Sword of Mana significantly expands the story with parallel narratives for both protagonists, enhanced backstory, and expanded dialogue. The remake removed Final Fantasy elements from the original release while incorporating gameplay mechanics and artistic styles from later Mana titles. Produced by series creator Koichi Ishii and directed by Takeo Oin, it was primarily developed by former Square staff at Brownie Brown.
The game received mixed-to-positive reviews. Critics praised the graphics and improvements over the original but found the story underwhelming and criticized the AI-controlled companion. Most recommended it primarily for series fans and genre enthusiasts. The original game received a second remake in 2016 titled Adventures of Mana.
