Description

Released on September 15, 1995 for the Super Famicom, Alice no Paint Adventure is an edutainment hybrid developed by SAS Sakata and published by Epoch. Based on Disney's 1951 animated classic Alice in Wonderland, the game combines interactive storytelling with creative art tools and mini-games to create a unique experience targeting young players. The game features three distinct modes of play. Story Mode allows players to experience Alice's journey through Wonderland either as an interactive adventure with password save functionality or as a cinematic movie that runs under an hour. The interactive mode requires literacy in both Japanese and English to fully appreciate the narrative and understand gameplay instructions. Paint Mode functions as a simplified digital art program, reminiscent of Mario Paint but with more limited capabilities. Players can create artwork using a 256-color palette on blank canvases or work with character-themed templates restricted to 16 colors, designed to help children develop hand-eye coordination. The mode includes only a basic eraser tool, and notably, paintings cannot be saved to memory or printed—a significant limitation compared to similar creative software of the era. Three arcade-style mini-games round out the package, each inspired by memorable scenes from the film: painting the Queen of Hearts' roses red, a whack-a-mole style game featuring story characters, and a Concentration-style memory matching game with Wonderland creatures. The game supports the Super NES Mouse peripheral for enhanced control in Paint Mode, making the drawing experience more intuitive. Additionally, it features compatibility with the Barcode Battler peripheral, allowing players to scan barcodes for additional content—an unusual feature that reflects Epoch's hardware ecosystem of the mid-1990s. As a Japan-exclusive Disney licensed title, Alice no Paint Adventure represents an interesting experiment in blending educational software, creative tools, and interactive storytelling within the framework of a beloved animated property.
